Rajanigandha Ferry capsizes in Padma River

Desk News:  A ferry on the Daulatdia-Paturia route capsized in the Padma River in Paturia of Manikganj district early Wednesday.

The ferry named “Rajanigandha” with pick-up trucks and covered vans sank in the river around 8:30am, said BIWTC Aricha office DGM Shah Md Khaled Newaz.

He said, in the morning, a utility ferry called Rajanigandha sank due to the impact of a bulkhead near Paturia No. 5 ghat. There were seven small trucks and two big trucks on the ferry.

On information, divers from the local fire service rushed to the spot and managed to rescue six people. One person is still missing from the ship.

Besides, BIWTA's salvage ship Hamza has proceeded to the spot from Daulatdia to rescue the sunken ferry on the Daulatdia-Paturia route.

At the same time, Rustam also started the journey from Mawa ghat.

The rescue team of Aricha River Port is already engaged in rescue operations.

Navy diving team has also joined the rescue operation, said sources from ISPR.

BIWTA Chairman Commodore Arif Ahmed Mostafa and senior officials have already left to strengthen and supervise public rescue operations.

Rajanigandha utility ferry left for Paturia from Daulatdia around 1am with seven small trucks and two big trucks. It approached Paturia and anchored there due to thick fog.

The reason behind the ferry capsize could not be known immediately.
