The High Court has sought details on the implementation of its previous order directing all education institutions, government and private institutions across the country to form sexual harassment prevention committees for women and children.
The court has ordered for submission of the information within the next three months. It has also asked why all government and private offices should not be ordered to form sexual harassment prevention committees.
The joint bench of Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice SM Maniruzzaman gave the order after hearing a writ petition on Sunday.
Lawyers Syeda Nasrin and Shahinuzzaman stood for the petitioner.
On August 7, 2008, Bangladesh National Women Lawyers Association (BNWLA) Executive Director Salma Ali filed a petition seeking HC directives to prevent sexual harassment of women and children at educational institutes and workplaces.
On May 14, 2009, the HC bench led by former Chief Justice Syed Mahmood Hossain issued several orders including the formation of a sexual harassment prevention committee in all institutions.
However, the orders remained unexecuted, and on October 21, 2021, Ain O Salish Kendra (ASK) filed a writ seeking details on the matter.
The secretaries to 40 ministries including the public administration, Supreme Court registrar general, Bar Council and University Grants Commission were made respondents to the writ.
