The US State Department reported late on Sunday that more than 60 countries issued a statement urging Afghans and international citizens to leave Afghanistan and adding that airports and border crossings must remain open.
Australian, Canadian, French, German, Italian, Japan, Korean, Qatar, and the British governments said in a joint statement that "those in positions of power and authority in Afghanistan have an obligation to protect human life and property, as well as to restore civil order and security."
As part of the international community, it promised to assist Afghanistan. "The Afghan people deserve to live with safety, security, and dignity."
Insurgents take control of Kabul's presidential palace after the US-led troops leave, and Western nations scramble to evacuate their citizens as the Taliban declare the war in Afghanistan over.
Thousands of US troops will assist in evacuating US citizens and Afghan employees from Kabul, as the US government takes over air traffic control to facilitate the departure of thousands of Americans.
After the Taliban seized Kabul, the Pentagon and State Department in a joint statement announced that the United States would be expanding its security force to 6,000 troops over the next 48 hours to facilitate these efforts. The Pentagon also announced that the U.S. was taking over air traffic control.
According to State Department Secretary Antony Blinken, the United States is joining the international community in affirming that Afghans and international citizens who want to leave their country must be allowed to do so. Roads, airports, and borders must be open, and calm must prevail.
As well as Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Denmark, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Estonia, Finland, Greece, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine, and Yemen, the joint statement was signed by the European Union's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
