Opener Mahmudul Hasan Joy struck 80 not out as Bangladesh reached 183-5 at lunch on day three of the opening Test against South Africa at Kingsmead Cricket Ground in Durban today.
Joy whose 80 was his career-best knock so far, eclipsing his 78 against New Zealand, basically kept Bangladesh in front foot as they resumed the day on a precarious 98-4.
Liton Das, another inform batter of Bangladesh, accompanied Joy with 41, at the second interval of the day. Bangladesh are now trailing by 184 runs as South Africa posted 367 before being all out in its first innings.
The visitors began the day in disappointing fashion as South African pacer Lizaad Williams removed night watchman Taskin Ahmed (1) for his debut wicket in the third over of the day.
But Liton and Joy steadied the ship, keeping the side unscathed throughout the morning session. In the process, they added 82-run for the undefeated sixth wicket stand.
Joy struck eight fours and a six in a knock, spanning 220 balls so far. Liton
played 90 balls and hit six boundaries for his 41.
Offspinner Simon Harmer who took four Bangladeshi wickets on day two, could
add any to his tally and ended the session with 4-76.
