Speakers at a discussion opined that creating mass awareness has become crucial for protecting the existing groundwater
resources from further degradation to safeguard human civilization and biodiversity.
They viewed that the groundwater resources in the region, including its vast Barind tract, should be protected and conserved through substantial and sustainable promotion of aquifer recharge. District administration and local office of Bangladesh Water Development Board (BWDB) jointly organised the meeting at the conference hall of deputy commissioner (DC) in observance of the World Water Day-2022 on Monday.
Officials and staff of various other organisations including Rajshahi City Corporation, Barind Multipurpose Development Authority (BMDA), Rajshahi Water and Sewerage Authority and Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) joined the programme.
This 2022, the focus is groundwater, an invisible resource with an impact visible everywhere.
DC Abdul Jalil addressed the meeting as the chief guest with BWDB Executive Engineer Shafiqul Islam in the chair.DPHE Executive Engineer Muhammad Rokonuzzaman, Additional DCs Shariful Haque and Kolyan Chowdhury and BWDB Assistant Director SM Raihanuzzaman, among others, also spoke.
The discussants unanimously mentioned that importance should be given to promoting managed aquifer recharge in the Barind area to protect its underground water from further declining.
Marking the day, a brief rally was brought out in the collectorate building premises and after parading some roads the rally culminated at the meeting venue.
