Bangladesh U-19 cricket team placed a foot in the semifinals of the U-19 Asia Cup following their thumping 222-run victory against Kuwait in the young Tigers' second Group B match at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium today.
Asked to bat, Bangladesh lost their first wicket with just three on the board. However, the young Tigers immediately bounced back as opener Mahfijul Islam played a solid 112-run knock, featuring four maximums and a dozen of boundaries.
Mahfijul's individual brilliance came to an end in the 36th over.
Afterward, SM Meherob's quickfire 42 off 24 deliveries, a knock that was laced with five boundaries and a maximum, and skipper Rakibul Hasan's run-a-ball 21 propelled Bangladesh to a total of 291 all out in 49.2 overs.
For Kuwait, Abdul Sadiq scalped three wickets for 40 runs. In reply, Kuwait's batters crumbled in the face of a formidable Bangladesh bowling attack as they were bundled out for 69 runs in 25.3 overs.
Opener Meet Bhavsar's 77-ball 43 was the highest score for Kuwait. Ripon Mondol bagged three wickets for Bangladesh while Meherob and Rakibul scalped a couple of wickets each.
Sri Lanka U-19 will take on Nepal U-19 on Sunday in their Group-B encounter. A win for Sri Lanka will confirm Bangladesh's place in the semifinals of the tournament.
