West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee was re-elected chairperson of Trinamool Congress party today and urged all regional parties to put up a united fight against the BJP in the 2024 general elections.
Amidst differences between the next generation leaders and a section of the old guard in the party, she urged TMC leaders and workers to be united, reports our New Delhi correspondent.
"I want all my party leaders and workers to promise they will not fight among themselves. Infighting will not be tolerated … groups within the party will not be tolerated … the party is one," she told the party at an event in Kolkata.
TMC held its organisational elections today after five years. According to TMC Secretary General Partha Chatterjee, Mamata was declared elected without a contest as no other leader entered the fray.
She said TMC has to fight hard to win all the 42 Lok Sabha seats in the next polls in West Bengal.
The TMC, Mamata underscored, is synonymous with "struggle", which it has been doing since its inception in 1998 when she broke away from Congress to float the party.
Indicating strife in TMC, party veteran and lawmaker Kalyan Banerjee had said recently that he does not consider anyone else but only Mamata Banerjee as his leader.
He had also criticised TMC National General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee, Mamata's nephew, over some suggestions he made about tackling Covid-19.
