Sirajganj district administration has not given any lease on Phuljor river for 3 years due to the loss of agricultural land due to sand extraction. The river excavation is going on for 2 years under the supervision of the next army. River mining is also nearing completion. In some places, river mining is going on under the supervision of the army, but river mining is not going on in Phuljor river of Nalka Union. However, illegal sand mining is currently going on. The Water Development Board says that although river excavation is going on in some places under the supervision of the army, river excavation is not going on in Phuljor river at Tinnandina of Nalka Union of Raiganj. But illegal sand extraction is currently going on in Tinnandina of Nalka Union. Nalka union chairman Abu Bakkar Siddique and owner of JK Construction, Tanveer Islam Shubo, have heaped sand as much as mountains by breaking the name of the army. Due to the news published in various newspapers, on (5th September 203rd) at noon, Raiganj Upazila Nirbahi Tripti Kona Mandal Nalka Union Parishad set up a mobile court in the west of the sand pile and collected a fine of Tk 150 million from a person.
Meanwhile, conscious circles have applauded Raiganj upazila administration for conducting a mobile court against the Balukhekods of Raiganj. Raiganj Upazila Conscious Mahal has seized the pile of sand at the western side of Nalka Union and demanded to sell the illegal sand at auction in order to increase the revenue of the government treasury.
According to information search, illegal extraction of sand is going on from Tinnandina of Phuljor river. There is no lease in Tinnandina, yet illegal sand mining is going on. Sand has been illegally mined from Tinnandina and heaps of sand have been piled up on the western side of Nalka Union Parishad and at Horganti on the west side of Dhaka-Bogra highway Alokdia Oil. However, the administration has not taken any measures to stop illegal sand extraction.
Going to the surface, it can be seen that Phuljor river flows through Raiganj upazila of Sirajganj. Ballgate is being filled by illegally extracting sand from Tinnandina of Nalka Union of Phuljor river through 3 dredgers. Sand is being piled at Horgaanti west of Alokdia Petrol Pump by placing unloaded dredgers under Ballgate Nalka Bridge of filled sand.
On the other hand, sand is being unloaded on the western side of Balgate Nalka Union Parishad filled with sand from Tinnandina. At present illegal sand worth about Tk 5-6 crore has been piled on the west side of Nalka Union Parishad.
The local people said that under the leadership of Nalka Union Parishad Chairman Abu Bakkar Siddique, the back side of the council has piled illegal sand worth crores of rupees. At present, there are many questions in the public mind about how illegal sand has been piled up in Raiganj upazila despite the fact that there is no government lease?
Mahbubur Rahman, Executive Engineer of Water Development Board, said that although the river has been dug under the supervision of the army in Raiganj's Fuljor river, no river is currently being dug in Tinnandina. In river mining, sand should be lifted by dredgers and transported through pipes and stored at nearby places. Sand cannot be transported far away after filling the ballgate. And if sand is filled in Ballgate through dredgers, the river will not be dug there. Instead of dredging the river, surrounding agricultural land will disappear.
