Government Must Present Reasons for Election Delay: Salah Uddin Ahmed

BNP Standing Committee member Salah Uddin Ahmed has stated that if the elections are delayed, the government must provide clear reasons for the delay. "It has already been six months. The reform commissions have submitted their reports. After the reports were submitted, it was expected that they would be presented to the country's political and democratic forces. However, 14 days have passed, and we have yet to see any such action from the government."

He made these comments on Wednesday, January 29, during a discussion titled "July Mass Uprising: Media and Journalism," organized by the Bangladesh Journalist Association (BJA) at the Abdul Salam Hall of the National Press Club.

Salah Uddin Ahmed further stated, "The direction of Bangladesh, how people's lives will be conducted, and how the rule of law will be ensured, will be determined by the people of this country, not by any foreign power. There will be discussions, debates, and disagreements among the democratic forces of this country. That is democracy."

Commenting on the reforms needed in the future, he said, "We need to discuss how and when we want the elections. The current question revolves around the interim government's success, failure, and indecision. If we want to make this government successful, we must strongly criticize them and guide them. We might even have to protest on the streets to bring the government back on track. It is not correct to assume that the interim government will make all decisions perfectly. The responsibility of managing it properly lies with the media, political parties, and democratic forces."

Regarding constitutional reform, he mentioned, "It is now clear that no one is advocating for a complete rewrite of the constitution. Everyone has suggested amendments."

The event was chaired by the President of the Bangladesh Journalist Association, Partha Sarathi Das, and was also attended by the Managing Director and Chief Editor of BSS, Mahbub Morshed, President of the Dhaka Journalists Union, Shahidul Islam, journalist leader Bashir Jamal, and President of the Gono Adhikar Porishad, Nurul Haq Nur, among others.
