Chattogram Division is home to the fewest number of poor people compared to other regions of the country. On the other hand, Barishal has the highest number of poor people. This information was revealed in the "Bangladesh Poverty Map 2022" report. The report was prepared by the Poverty and Livelihood Statistics Cell of the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS).
The report was published on Thursday (January 30) at the BICC conference room in the capital. According to the report, 19.2% of the country's population lives below the poverty line. While the poverty rate in urban areas is 16.5%, it is over 20% in rural areas.
It also mentions that in Barishal, 28.1% of rural residents are poor, while 21.7% of urban residents are poor. In Chattogram, the poverty rate in rural areas is 9.9%, and in urban areas, it is 17.8%.
The report states that after Barishal, the division with the next highest poverty rate is Mymensingh, with 24.2%. The poverty rate in Dhaka has increased by 1.8%, reaching 19.6%. During this time, the poverty rate has decreased in the Rajshahi and Mymensingh divisions.
Meanwhile, the highest poverty rate, 63.2%, is in the Dasar Upazila of Madaripur. The poverty rate in Sylhet has risen from 17.3% to 18.5%.
