Dr. Kurban Ali, Assistant Proctor and Professor of the Department of Philosophy at Chittagong University (CU), was slapped and humiliated by Afsana Enayet Emi, a student from the 2018-2019 academic session of the Law Department. A video of the incident went viral on social media on Tuesday, February 11. The incident reportedly took place in front of Sheikh Hasina Hall on the night of February 5.
It is reported that on February 5, when university students tried to break the concrete boat in front of the hall and remove the signboard, there was an altercation between the students of the hall. During the argument, Afsana Enayet Emi slapped Assistant Proctor, Dr. Kurban Ali. On the same day, there was also an incident where a journalist who was present to cover the news had his mobile phone taken away and was harassed.
In regard to the incident, the affected Assistant Proctor, Professor Dr. Kurban Ali, said, "We went to Sheikh Hasina Hall to perform our duties that day. We are not enemies of anyone. When we tried to talk to the female students in the hall to control the disorder, they refused to listen to us. At one point, a student named Afsana Enayet Emi physically assaulted me."
When contacted to inquire about the allegations, Afsana Enayet Emi initially answered the phone. However, when informed that the caller was a journalist, she hung up.
Professor Dr. Mohammad Shamim Uddin Khan, the university's pro vice chancellor (academic), stated that an investigation committee has been formed regarding the incident. A decision will be made based on the report of the committee.
