Remembering Abdullah Al Noman: Chittagong’s Brave Freedom Fighter and People’s Leader

For the past few days, I felt compelled to write about Noman Bhai. This piece is not just a personal tribute, but also an effort to remind people of Chittagong, BNP, and Bangladesh of the indelible mark he left behind. In 2018, as the national elections approached, I was hosting the program Chattogram Dialogue on Bangla TV. As part of this series, a special episode titled Election Thoughts featured the respected leader of the people of Chittagong, a brave freedom fighter, former successful minister, and devoted advocate for the city’s development — Abdullah Al Noman. Though he is no longer with us, his memory remains eternal. Our association began during the anti-Ershad movement. At the time, I was a young journalist and writer, actively involved in political movements. Noman Bhai was already a prominent name in Chittagong politics. But the true foundation of our bond was our shared commitment to the development of Chittagong and the welfare of its people. Countless memories of that time remain vivid in my mind. I had seen him closely and worked with him, but meeting him directly as a television presenter and recording a talk show with him was a dream come true. I visited him many times, sought his advice repeatedly, yet the memory of our first talk show recording remains fresh in my mind. I recently received the joyful news that his capable son, Saeed Al Noman, has been nominated by the BNP to contest the upcoming elections from Chittagong-10. This is both timely and significant. As a journalist, writer, and television presenter, I wholeheartedly welcome this decision. Particularly, it reflects the farsightedness of Tarique Rahman, the future leader of the country. Noman Bhai: A Humanitarian Leader Beyond Politics  Noman Bhai was not just a political leader; he was a humanitarian who prioritized people’s welfare and national development above all else. He fought for the country’s independence as a brave freedom fighter, worked tirelessly for Chittagong’s development as a minister, and remained accountable to the people as a political leader. His compassion and political foresight have been highly instructive to me. Recalling memories, in 2001, during my trip to Algeria for a youth conference, he gifted me one thousand dollars. In 1995, during the month-long Victory Silver Jubilee celebrations at Lal Dighi Maidan, he awarded me the titles of Best Speaker and Best Young Organizer. I also had the honor of receiving the Nabin Chandra Sen Literary Award from his hands. These were not mere awards; they were symbols of his generosity, encouragement, and sincerity toward people. Our first direct encounter took place at the VIP Tower. I proposed recording a talk show on electoral thoughts at his residence. He politely declined, saying, “No, I will come to your studio. Just tell me where I need to go.” His simplicity and humility left a deep impression on me. The studio was located at S Alam Media Tower near Askar Dighi. The political atmosphere during the elections was tense, yet Noman Bhai participated in the show with ease, grace, and wisdom. During the recording, he answered every question with enthusiasm and depth. He explained the legacy of BNP, founded by the late President Ziaur Rahman, Chittagong’s development, and the transformation of ordinary people’s lives. He recalled my role in various developmental activities, including those in the Education Board and Veterinary University, demonstrating his attention to people’s contributions and efforts. One memorable instance was July 9, 1994, when he, as minister, held a meeting regarding hartals in Chittagong. That day, I realized that he was not only responsible as a leader but also wise and instructive. Every conversation with him was like a classroom, teaching me political analysis, developmental thinking, and accountability to the people.  Contributions to Chittagong’s Development Noman Bhai was a relentless force for Chittagong’s development. His initiatives and projects still stand as a testament to his foresight and dedication. From educational institutions to healthcare facilities and infrastructure development, his work has left an enduring legacy. He never prioritized personal gain; instead, he consistently placed the people’s welfare first. Under his leadership, Chittagong became more than a city—it became a symbol of progress. His vision and insight continue to inspire both the citizens and political leaders of Chittagong.
Humanitarian Qualities of Noman Bhai  Noman Bhai’s most remarkable quality was his humanity. He never succumbed to the arrogance of power and always treated every individual with respect. Those who worked with him remember him not only as a political leader but also as a dear friend, mentor, and guide. His generosity, humility, compassion, and sense of responsibility remain deeply ingrained in my memory. Looking to the Future As I write this, I pay tribute to Noman Bhai while hoping that his worthy son, Saeed Al Noman, will continue his father’s ideals and efforts for Chittagong’s development. May he take on the leadership role to transform the lives of Chittagong and Bangladesh’s people. We hope he will demonstrate foresight, responsibility, and humanitarian leadership akin to his father. Noman Bhai’s teachings, ideals, and wisdom serve as guiding lights. His memory will continue to inspire every citizen of Chittagong. His legacy of development, political foresight, and humanitarianism is now permanently etched in history.
