Chattogram, Wednesday (October 22):
A significant courtesy meeting of the International Human Rights Commission (IHRC) was held today at 3 p.m. at the Chattogram Circuit House. The newly appointed Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Chattogram, Saiful Islam, met with a delegation led by M.A. Hashem Raju, Chairman of the IHRC Bangladesh Chapter. Among those present were Golam Sarwar Khan, IHRC Asia Regional Director; Mohammad Kamal Uddin, Bangladesh Coordinator and renowned journalist-author; Lion Asif Ahmed Mridha, journalist Ali Akkas, journalist Kutub Uddin, journalist Jakir Ullah, social worker Abdul Gafur, and human rights activist Monika Akter, among others. The delegation began by offering floral greetings to the newly appointed DC. In response, the DC warmly welcomed the IHRC representatives and expressed his interest in working collaboratively to enhance administrative efficiency, sustainable development, and the protection of human rights in Chattogram.
IHRC Chairman M.A. Hashem Raju said,
“Chattogram is a sensitive region—incidents like hill cutting, land grabbing, waterlogging, and environmental degradation still persist. With proactive and effective administrative measures, this city can become more livable. We want to ensure that human rights are not violated anywhere. The district administration must play a leading role in safeguarding citizens’ rights, security, and dignity.”
He further added,
“It is crucial to take immediate action whenever any human rights violation occurs. A just society can only be built when the administration and the people work hand in hand.”
Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam expressed his gratitude to the IHRC delegation, saying,
“I have just assumed office. I am deeply committed to the people, hills, rivers, and environment of Chattogram. Activities such as illegal hill cutting, encroachment, and environmental destruction will not be tolerated. We will identify the root causes of these problems and work step by step to resolve them. We can also arrange more detailed meetings with you to jointly develop practical action plans.”
Although brief, the meeting proved to be highly productive and meaningful. Both parties pledged to work together for the integrated development of Chattogram’s environment, administration, and human rights protection. At the end of the meeting, the IHRC delegation presented a floral memento to the Deputy Commissioner as a token of goodwill. They also discussed the current state and future potential of Chattogram in an informal exchange. Following the meeting, the IHRC representatives praised Saiful Islam for his sincerity and humanitarian approach, expressing optimism that under his leadership, the protection of human rights and the establishment of good governance in Chattogram will reach stronger foundations.
