In a case that took place in Bandarban after four long years, the District and Sessions Judge Court sentenced Md. Haidar Ali (32) to death for the murder of his pregnant wife. Additionally, he was fined 50,000 taka and sentenced to life imprisonment for two more months in case of non-payment. The verdict was delivered by Judge Arun Pal of the District and Sessions Court on Tuesday morning, January 14, 2025.
The convicted individual, Md. Haidar Ali (32), is the son of the late Latifur Rahman from the village of Khantakata in the 5th ward of Raikhali Union in Rangamati. According to the charge sheet, Md. Haidar Ali married Rupa Akter seven months ago. After the marriage, they visited his in-laws' house, and later, he left with his wife, claiming they were going to visit his aunt. When they did not return by evening, the family members began searching for them.
On August 8, 2021, the body of an unknown woman, with her hands and face bound, was found in a bush beside a road in the Galachipa Muslim Para area. Later, the victim's family identified the body, which was sent for an autopsy at the hospital. Following the identification, the victim’s family filed a case at the police station for murder. After taking testimonies and confirming the evidence, the court found the accused guilty under Section 302 and sentenced him to death.
The victim’s father, Nurul Islam, expressed his satisfaction, stating, "After four years, the court has sentenced my daughter's killer to the highest punishment, the death penalty. I am very happy and relieved."
Public Prosecutor Md. Alomgir Chowdhury said, "After testimonies were heard and the truth was proven, including the defendant's confession, the court has sentenced the accused to the maximum penalty."
SI Md. Ujjal Hossain, on duty at the district jail, confirmed, "The court has sentenced the accused to death, and after all procedures, he has been sent to the district jail."
