The position of Chairman of the Chattogram Education Board will be vacant this week. The current chairman, Professor Rezaul Karim, is retiring as his tenure has come to an end. After serving for eight months, he will officially go on retirement leave on January 31. However, he will take his release from the board on January 29 to facilitate his transition to retirement. Although he was scheduled for retirement leave, the Ministry issued an order on January 21 to transfer him to OSD (Officer on Special Duty) just 10 days before his scheduled leave.
Meanwhile, discussions have begun regarding who will be the next chairman of the board. There is speculation that the current chairman, Professor Rezaul Karim, is making efforts to secure a contract-based extension as the board chairman. It is reported that he has already sought recommendations from several top politicians.
A board official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "There is talk within the board that he may continue as chairman for some time on a contract basis. I have heard that he is trying for this."When contacted for a comment, current Chairman Professor Rezaul Karim declined to make any statements.
Earlier, on May 14 of last year, Rezaul Karim returned to the board as chairman after serving as the Director of the Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education (Maushi) for the Chattogram region. Before that, he had served as the board’s secretary for nearly nine months. However, during his tenure as board secretary, he came under criticism for allegedly accepting money "hand to hand" from a company that supplied OMR sheets. After issuing two show-cause notices, the Ministry of Secondary and Higher Education (Maushi) transferred him to the Chattogram region on October 19 last year. On January 26 of the same year, Professor Rezaul Karim had been appointed as Secretary of the Chattogram Education Board.
Additionally, following the change in government, the Ministry began a process of reshuffling the chairman positions at 11 education boards, including technical and madrasa education boards, at the start of the new year. Several chairmen have already been transferred to OSD positions.
