Education and Planning Advisor Dr. Wahiduddin Mahmud has stated that work is underway to establish a separate university with the seven colleges and that Titumir College will also be included. However, if any college is to be given special consideration, it would be Rajshahi College, due to its long history and tradition.
He made these comments in response to a question from journalists after an ECNEC meeting on Sunday (February 2) at the NEC Conference Room in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar, Dhaka.
Dr. Mahmud clarified, “I haven’t made any special considerations. However, if there is to be a special consideration, it would be Rajshahi College. No university is created with an ultimatum or set deadlines. We are not here to make demands; we are here for good governance and reform.”
He further added, “Student protests are good, but they also need to attend exams. If protests are necessary, they should be conducted without disrupting education or causing public inconvenience. The government will not establish a university just because of demands.”
The education adviser also mentioned that a specialized committee has been formed to turn the seven colleges into a university, and they are actively working on it. He pointed out that half of the country’s universities have been established in the past seven years, which is a unique record globally. He emphasized that while protesting is fine, students must also focus on their exams, and any protests should be conducted with attention to avoid disruption to regular classes and public inconvenience.
