International Desk: Two children were killed in a knife attack in the UK. Besides, 11 others were injured. Six of them are in critical condition. Police said the attack happened at a dance class in northern England on Monday local time. This information was given in a report of the news agency AFP.
A 17-year-old suspect from Southport, near Liverpool in northwest England, has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder. Merseyside Police said in a statement that two adults were seriously injured in the attack.
Police Chief Serena Kennedy said the attack was not being treated as a terrorist attack. However, it is not yet clear what caused the attack.
He said that all the injured were stabbed. Prime Minister Keir Starmer said today's attack is truly tragic. The whole country is deeply saddened today.
He further said, "We offer our deepest condolences to the victims, their families, friends and the wider community." This grief cannot be expressed in words.
Police Chief Serena Kennedy said a Taylor Swift themed dance class was organized for children and teenagers. From there, a phone call came to the police asking for help.
He said several people, mostly children, were violently attacked. Officials were shocked by the incident.
He added that the suspect probably walked down the street and started attacking the children. The adults in the room tried to save the children.
Policemen entered the spot and arrested the suspect. A knife was recovered from him.
King Charles III expressed his deepest condolences to the victims of this terrible attack. In addition, Prince William and his wife Catherine said in a post on social media, "We cannot imagine what the families, friends and loved ones of those killed and injured in Southport today are going through as parents. They also termed this attack as a 'heinous attack'.
