News Desk: Forest and Environment Advisor Rizwana Hasan said that the government has given in-principle approval for the amendment to the Prevention of Violence against Women and Children Act.
She said that the decision was taken today in a special meeting chaired by Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus.
The Environment Advisor said this at a press briefing organized at the Foreign Service Academy on Bailey Road in the capital on Monday (March 17).
Earlier on Wednesday (March 12), Legal Advisor Asif Nazrul said that a draft of the amended Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act has been prepared to reduce the investigation and trial time of rape cases by half. The advisor told reporters after a meeting with the leaders of the anti-rape platform at the secretariat. On that day, the Legal Advisor said, we held a consultation meeting with everyone concerned the day before yesterday (Monday) and yesterday (Tuesday). We have made a draft (Amended Women and Child Abuse Prevention Act) law, which we are circulating to some stakeholders today. We will try to tighten the law as soon as possible. I told them that the trial of rape cases is not only fast, but also sure and proper. According to the draft law, the investigation time of rape cases is being reduced from 30 days to 15 days and the time for completion of trial work is being reduced from 180 days to 90 days. If the judge thinks so, he can proceed with the trial and investigation of the case on the basis of a medical certificate without a DNA report - such a provision is being made online, the legal advisor said.
