The growth of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) during the first quarter of the current fiscal year, from July to September, has been the lowest in the last four fiscal years. According to the provisional data published by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS), the GDP growth rate stands at 1.81%. In the same quarter of the previous fiscal year, the GDP growth was 6.04%. During the pandemic in the fiscal year 2020-21, the GDP growth for the October-December quarter had dropped even further to -0.93%.
Throughout the first quarter of the current fiscal year, there was political instability across the country. This has been reflected in the report published by BBS on Monday.
From the summary of the GDP report for the first quarter, it is evident that while growth significantly declined during this period, this trend began in January of last year. Since then, GDP growth has consistently decreased over three consecutive quarters. In the third quarter of the previous fiscal year, growth was 5.42%, which then fell to 4.78% in the second quarter and 3.91% in the third quarter.
An analysis of the GDP in the three major sectors of the economy shows that during the July-September period, the growth in the industrial sector has decreased more sharply compared to the same period last year. The growth rate dropped from 8.22% to 2.13%. The services sector also experienced a similar decline, with GDP growth falling from 5.07% to 1.54%.
