In the Faitong union of Lama upazila in Bandarban district, over 30 illegal brickfields have been cutting hills for soil and indiscriminately destroying forests for firewood. On Monday (January 20), a joint operation was conducted by the upazila administration and the Department of Environment.
During the operation, a mobile court was carried out at four illegal brickfields in the union, where hill cutting and the use of firewood were found. The joint operation was led by Rupayan Dev, the Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate of Lama upazila, and Md. Rezaul Karim, Assistant Director of the Bandarban Environment Department, with cooperation from the Lama upazila administration, the Bandarban district office of the Environment Department, the Fire Service and Civil Defense, Lama, and the Lama Forest Department.
The mobile court fined the four brickfields a total of 11 lakh taka. During the operation, 180 cubic feet of firewood were seized, and the kilns were extinguished with water, halting their operations.
The operation was carried out with the full cooperation of the Lama Forest Department’s Range Officer, S. M. Habibullah, members of the Lama police station, and the Lama Fire Service. The Environment Department’s Bandarban district office stated that such operations will continue to protect the environment.
