Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain said that combating dengue requires more than just the City Corporation's efforts; it needs a collective effort from everyone. Only a coordinated approach from both government and private service organizations can protect the city’s residents from dengue.
He made this statement on Tuesday (January 28) during a meeting with a delegation from the international health organization Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) at the CCC office in Tiger Pass. The meeting focused on dengue prevention, improving medical services, and integrated healthcare initiatives in the city.
Present at the meeting were MSF’s Director in Bangladesh, Antonino Cardona, Chief Health Officer Christina Mach, Deputy Chief Health Officer Dr. Rezwanur Rahman Masum, Water and Sanitation Advisor François Quick, and Referral Team Supervisor SM Sifat.
During the meeting, the mayor briefed the representatives about the various initiatives taken by CCC. He highlighted that regular mosquito control programs are being carried out in different wards of the city. Awareness campaigns to prevent dengue are being conducted, involving educational institutions and local communities. Hospitals and health centers have strengthened their preparations to ensure patients receive prompt treatment. Survey and monitoring systems are in place to identify dengue hotspots. A special dengue unit has been set up at Memon Hospital. CCC is already conducting regular mosquito control activities, including fogging and larvicide spraying in various wards daily.
The MSF representatives expressed their interest in improving dengue treatment in Chattogram and assured the mayor of their support through expert training, logistical assistance, and supply of equipment.
