The authorities have announced the closure of two units of Pacific Casuals Limited, a subsidiary of Pacific Jeans Group, in Chattogram. On Sunday, February 9th, the company decided to shut down Unit-1 and Unit-2 of the factory located in CEPZ.
A notice signed by the Senior Manager of the Human Resources and Administration Department of the factory stated that due to workers' illegal actions of halting work and making unjust demands, the authorities have decided to close the factory indefinitely from February 10th (Monday) in accordance with Section 12(1) of the EPZ Labor Law 2019. All factory operations will remain suspended until further notice.
A Pacific Jeans official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "There was a protest about a month ago in all our factories. The management agreed to all the workers' demands. However, workers at Pacific Casuals staged a protest today (Sunday) morning, asking for extra benefits, including breakfast. They didn’t protest over wages, but they created disorder for additional benefits, which led to the factory being shut down at around 2 PM."
When attempts were made to contact the Managing Director of Pacific Group, Syed Mohammad Tanvir, multiple calls were made to his mobile, but he did not respond.
