Press conference of Chittagong Winsman Ship Crane Operator Welfare Multi-faceted Cooperative (Reg: 9704) Society demanding to stop illegal recruitment

News Desk: In place of the oppressed workers who are living inhuman lives, the Honorable Prime Minister of the Government of Bangladesh, demanding to stop the illegal recruitment of foreigners, who were the masterminds of various conspiracies and labor torture during the previous government. Seeking the attention of all the administration agencies and port authorities, the Chittagong Winsman Ship Crane Operator Welfare Multi-faceted Cooperative (Reg: 9704) Society organized a press conference. The written statement was read by the president of the concerned society, Belal Hossain.
In the presence of a large number of media personnel and victims, the president Belal Hossain said in his speech with a sorrowful voice - Since 16/5/2017, we, the Winsman Ship Crane Operator, have been operating cranes on foreign ships under the jurisdiction of the Chattogram User Bath and Ship Handling Operator. Since there is no legal trade union in the port city, Chittagong Port Winchman Ship Crane Operator Welfare Multipurpose Cooperative Association has been conducting labor rights/organizational activities through Reg. 9704.
“In the last 18 years, 154 Winchman Ship Crane Operators were appointed in ship handling bath operator companies. At that time, the members of the association's ID were appointed after checking the register of the Winchman Association at the Bath and Ship Handling Operators Association office. The current number of members of the association is 1379. Out of these, 581 are currently working in ship handling companies. The remaining members are living a life of unemployment and poverty.”
The written statement further said that the representatives of the Bath and Ship Handling Operators Association have already submitted a list for the appointment of 49 external offerors who are not members of the association in 7 companies. All the crane operators who are working are on duty for 15 days a month. If 7 operators are appointed at the rate of 15, all the operators will die of hunger.
"Therefore, I strongly demand that the recruitment be stopped at this time. If possible, by booking 2 operators running on each crane in 24 hours with 1 additional reliever, each ship will unload goods 20/percent faster, which will reduce Bangladesh's annual expenditure of thousands of crores of taka. The reputation of the port in the international world will increase rapidly. The working operator will be able to pray, will recover physically, and the number of accidents will decrease. Therefore, I request you to book relievers. Otherwise, in order to make the port operational, the companies that have fewer operators should appoint 1 member of the association's ID in each of those companies. Otherwise, if the labor and satisfaction of Chittagong Port is created, the winsman ship crane operator representatives will not be responsible.
Referring to the labor abuse, it was further said, "In 2020, the workers and employees of the port city supported by Jamaat-BNP were exhausted by the exploitation and torture of some extortionist groups in the name of Awami League. Due to the oppression of extortionists in the name of Awami, 10 out of 12 elected leaders of the association could not participate in the council for 1 year. The working operators did not come to the association office for fear of losing their jobs. At that time, against the syndicate in the port city named Awami, I brought 42 people from my Noakhali Subarnachar to the city to free the 80% BNP Jamaat-supported workers and employees of the port city. I continued the fight to survive with the Awami-named fraudsters by keeping them as colleagues. By the infinite mercy of Allah, I tried to protect the workers and employees of the port city from oppression as much as possible and I have approved the gratuity of 28 crore 86 lakh 70 thousand 252 taka from the port authority from the date of joining the work of 581 operators working in the association on 16/5/2007. I have confirmed the heirs of the working operators, and I and my colleagues have spent approximately 4 crore taka in labor and money. I have sold the money and assets of my parents. Due to the current debt of 94 lakh taka, I and my colleagues are living a life of fugitive humanity.
It has been learned that some crane operators under the Bangladesh Ship Handling Operator will already be appointed. The surprising thing is that these are the same people who exploited the port workers under the Awami banner in the past. Those same people are now selling the name of BNP and engaging in various conspiracies. This is not only a threat to the victims, but also to the port itself.
