Barguna Correspondent: A group of people in the name of 'Tawhidi Janata' attacked, vandalized and set fire to a shrine in Amtoli upazila of Barguna. In addition, food cooked for devotees visiting the shrine was destroyed.
The incident took place at the 'Ismail Shah Babar' shrine on the side of Battola road in the upazila on Sunday midnight, said Amtoli Police Station OC Ariful Islam.
Upon receiving the news, Barguna Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Shafiul Alam visited the shrine on Monday morning.
At that time, he said, "I have asked both parties to remain calm. The situation is currently calm. I have instructed the police to investigate the matter."
Police and eyewitnesses said that several hundred people in the name of 'Tawhidi Janata' took out a procession carrying sticks to prevent the Urs of the shrine. When the procession reached the shrine, people from several other nearby villages joined in and vandalized and set fire to the shrine. At that time, various furniture of the shrine, tin of the house and bricks of the walls were removed, as well as looting. As the 'Tawhidi Janata' surrounded the shrine with fire, law enforcement members could not go.
