On Sunday (January 26), around 12:15 AM, a fire broke out in the Banglabazar area of Salimpur Union, located alongside the Dhaka-Chittagong highway, near T&T Road in the upazila. According to Fire Service sources, the fire started at the oil depot and spread to nearby establishments, including a furniture showroom, stationery shop, garment warehouse, cooling corner, furniture store, rod and cement shop, and several tea stalls.
Four units from Kumira and Bayazid Fire Services, with the help of locals, worked for four hours to control the fire. By then, the oil depot and 15 shops had been completely destroyed. Senior Station Officer of Kumira Fire Service, Al Mamun, stated that the fire originated from the oil depot and later spread to the surrounding shops. The total damage, including the depot and goods from the 15 shops, is estimated at nearly 2 crore taka.
