Mujib Qilla collapsed in Yamuna

Sirajganj District correspondant: The Directorate of Disaster Management is building a 'Mujib Killa' to protect the lives and property of the people of Char region from natural disasters in Kazipur of Sirajganj. It is being constructed between Chalal and Char Douglas Mauza of Char Girish Union of the upazila. However, before the construction work was completed, a part of the Mujib Fort collapsed due to the flood of Yamuna river.

It is known that this Mujib Killa is being built at a cost of more than two crore rupees. On 4 December 2022, local Member of Parliament Engineer Tanveer Shakeel Joy laid its foundation stone. The construction work is expected to be completed this July. A contractor named Sajeeb Construction is implementing the work. But on July 5, a part collapsed in the water of Yamuna. There is a fear that it will disappear completely if the water level of Yamuna rises.The Thais say, we are in doubt whether this Mujib Qilla, built to protect our lives and property from natural disasters, will survive at all. Because the work was broken before it was finished.

When asked to know the reason for the erosion, they said that the water velocity of the Yamuna river increased due to the closure of the only bridge to drain the water in the area. It broke a local road. And a part of the Mujib Qilla has collapsed due to the soil moving from under the structure built on the new soil.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Office sources said that this is a B-type facility. Area 9 thousand 300 square feet. The name of the project is 'Mujib Qilla Construction, Renovation and Development'. The objective is to ensure the safety of the people and their families in the disaster-affected areas, the safe storage of valuables and the safe shelter of domestic animals affected by the disaster. In normal times it can be used multi-purpose. It is planned to conduct educational programs, use it as a playground and bazaar, organize meetings for community development, place training centers and use it as a temporary service center.

Mujib Killa Project Director Monowar Hossain said that a three-member technical committee has already been formed to verify whether the fort will survive there or not. The committee will visit the site and submit a report at the beginning of next month. Then a decision will be taken.
