“The History of Denmark and the Proud Star of Chittagong – Golam Sarwar Khan”

Md. Kamal Uddin:
Beneath the blue arc of the northern European sky—where the cold air carries the fragrance of history—stands a nation called Denmark. Once the land of the Vikings—warriors, sailors, and symbols of adventure—its people from the 8th to 10th centuries became known for their legendary voyages. Their ships were not mere vessels, but wings of dreams, symbols of conquest, and pages of history. It was King Harald Bluetooth who united the kingdom and spread Christianity across the land. His name lives on today as a symbol of modern technology—Bluetooth. During the Middle Ages, Denmark gradually evolved into a monarchy. Under Valdemar the Great, it became a powerful state, ruling over large parts of southern Sweden and Norway. In the 14th century, the Kalmar Union was formed—uniting Denmark, Norway, and Sweden under one crown. Political complexities later caused Sweden to leave, leaving Denmark and Norway to continue together. The Lutheran Reformation of 1536 transformed the nation’s religious and social fabric. Despite losing southern Sweden in the 17th-century wars, Denmark rebuilt itself with resilience. After the Napoleonic Wars in 1814, Norway came under Swedish rule, leaving Denmark as a smaller kingdom—but rich in culture and human values. In 1849, Denmark adopted a constitutional monarchy, where the King reigned but power rested in the hands of the people through Parliament. During the World Wars, Denmark maintained neutrality. Although Nazi Germany occupied it during World War II, the Danish people protected their Jewish citizens—an enduring symbol of humanity. Post-war, Denmark rebuilt rapidly, joining NATO in 1949 and the European Union in 1973. Today, Copenhagen is not only the capital but a model of humane, green urban living.

Golam Sarowar Khan – A Proud Son of Chattogram in Denmark’s Story

In this long arc of Danish history, a son of Chattogram—Golam Sarowar Khan—has found his place. Born in Anwara, Chattogram, into a distinguished family, his father Sarfaraz Khan was a respected zamindar and politician, who advanced the BNP’s early political movement under President Ziaur Rahman. Golam Sarowar Khan inherited that legacy of patriotism, integrity, and humanity. Twenty-five years ago, he left Bangladesh—not out of financial need, but because of political realities. In Denmark, he did not lose himself; instead, he became a torchbearer of intellect, hard work, ethics, and compassion. Today, he stands as an inspiring example for expatriate Bangladeshi youth—showing that true success lies not in wealth, but in honesty, generosity, thought, and diligence

Global Roles and Leadership

Golam Sarowar Khan currently serves as:

  • South Asia Officer, International Human Rights Commission

  • Legal Affairs Secretary, Denmark BNP

  • Organizational Secretary, European BNP

He blends patriotism with purpose—turning emotion into responsibility and action. Tarique Rahman, the BNP’s acting chairman, holds deep confidence in his leadership and wisdom. His guiding belief is clear: “To build the Bangladesh of tomorrow, we must prepare our youth today.”

A Human, Political, and Social Persona

I have known him for thirty years. His smile, his words, and his demeanor all touch people’s hearts. Though a leader, he never carries the airs of one; he mingles easily with everyone. Even amid his busiest moments, he never forgets his homeland. On October 23, during a meeting with the newly appointed Chattogram Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam at the Circuit House, his thoughts reflected deep patriotism, humanitarian values, and the spirit of communal harmony.

Bridging History and Inspiration

Golam Sarowar Khan often says, “To connect with the Danish people, one must first understand their history.”
His grasp of 700–800 years of Danish heritage—its culture, ethics, and social mindset—has shaped him into a multidimensional leader: a scholar, a patriot, a human rights activist, and an international representative. Today, under the Danish sky, a new star shines bright—Golam Sarowar Khan, the pride of Chattogram and the son of Anwara. He is not merely an expatriate; he is a man shaped by history, guided by humanity, and devoted to values that transcend borders. His life and work prove a timeless truth: success is born of honesty, intellect, perseverance, generosity, and an understanding of history. Golam Sarowar Khan today stands not just in Denmark—but on the world map—as a symbol of light, where history, patriotism, humanity, and leadership come together in a single, extraordinary story.
