Farida Hossain: The Eternal Light of Inspiration in Bangla Literature” — Md. Kamal Uddin

In the long and luminous journey of Bangla literature, there emerge certain figures who are not merely craftsmen of words but the very interpreters of their time—voices that echo the inner rhythms of human emotion and illuminate the collective consciousness of a nation. Among such radiant souls stands Farida Hossain—a brilliant star in Bangladesh’s firmament of short stories, novels, plays, and children’s literature. She is a rare blend of wisdom, empathy, and creativity—a writer who has inspired countless men and women to find courage through words, and who, through her literary magazine Abinashwar, opened the gateway for hundreds of young writers to make their debut in the world of letters.
Her pen reflects the naked truth of society as much as it breathes the laughter of children, the tenderness of nature, and the profound voice of womanhood.
Born on January 19, 1945, in Kolkata, India, Farida Hossain grew up in an enlightened and liberal environment that nurtured her intellectual and creative sensibilities. Her father, Faiz Ahmed, was an international figure in the world of labor and served as the Director of the Governing Body of the International Labour Organization (ILO), representing Bangladesh on the global stage. Her mother, Begum Faizunnesa, was a kind-hearted homemaker from whom Farida inherited her compassion and humanity. Her ancestral roots lie in Shaherkhali village, Mirsarai, Chittagong, a place long associated with the light of knowledge and culture.
In 1966, she married Muhammad Mosharraf Hossain, a distinguished politician from Feni. Between family, motherhood, and writing, she maintained a remarkable balance—emerging as a symbol of strength and grace in the realm of womanhood.
During the 1960s, while still a university student, the young and passionate Farida published her first short story collection, “Ajanta”, which soon became a milestone in modern Bangla fiction. The cover was designed by the legendary artist Mustafa Monowar, symbolizing the dawn of a new creative journey. What followed were timeless works like “Shohojatri”, “Ekjon Kajolir Kotha”, “Saree”, “Himaloyer Deshe”, “Ekti Sheetal Mrityu”, and “Jibon Jemon”—each exploring the depths of human struggle, love, and the realities of society.
Her novels—“Aradhona”, “Mukhosh”, and “Kojonar Kotha”—hold a permanent place in the hearts of readers, while her plays such as “Jhorer Pore”, “Tushar Konna”, “Tarar Khoje”, and “Khukur Shopno” beautifully mirror the complexities of human emotion.
Farida Hossain’s contribution to children’s literature is monumental. Her enchanting works—“Rupkothar Deshe”, “Mitali”, “Anondo Fuljhuri”, “Bhai-Boner Golpo”, “Chand Konnar Kotha”, “Mayadwipe Obhijan”, and “Sure Chhonde Chharagan”—are not just stories but worlds of imagination where children learn the values of kindness, creativity, and moral strength. For her, children are not merely readers but dreamers, architects of the future.
Beyond her literary genius, Farida Hossain created a nurturing environment for literature itself. Through her founding of Abinashwar, she built a sanctuary for emerging writers—a literary haven where creativity blossomed and new voices found their first recognition. On the global stage, as President of PEN International Bangladesh Centre, she brought Bangla literature to international prominence.
I personally feel blessed to have been inspired by her. It was through her encouragement that I became a member of PEN International and had the honor of joining her in the 76th International Writers’ Conference in Korea (2012), where she led the Bangladeshi delegation with grace and dignity. In the presence of Nobel Laureates like Wole Soyinka and Jean-Marie Gustave Le Clézio, as well as governors, poets, and novelists from around the world, Farida Hossain stood as a proud and luminous voice of Bangladesh.
Those who know her closely describe her as a person of humility and quiet strength. Her vast knowledge never turns into arrogance—it shines as light. Her fame is not a pursuit of ego but a fulfillment of social responsibility. Even within a politically engaged family, she has preserved her creative independence and spiritual depth.
Her extraordinary literary journey has been recognized with Bangladesh’s Ekushey Padak (2004)—the nation’s highest civilian honor. She has also received the Michael Madhusudan Award, Maulana Bhasani Gold Medal, Atish Dipankar Gold Medal, Nandini Literary Award, Bangladesh Lekhak Samiti Award, Fulkoly Literary Award, and the Nareekontho Shining Personality Award (2008)—among many others.
Yet, her greatest recognition remains the love of her readers. I count myself fortunate to have learned from her the true essence of literature—where words become bridges of the soul. Her guidance has deeply shaped my own literary path, leading me to write 30 books, all born from the inspiration she instilled.
Today, as new generations embark on their literary journey, Farida Hossain continues to shine as their guiding light. Her life, her work, and her quiet contributions are timeless sources of inspiration. She is the pride of our era, the grace of our literature.
As long as words live and as long as the pen breathes, the name of Farida Hossain will be uttered with reverence, love, and gratitude.
May her light remain eternal—
May her creative spirit continue to ignite the flame of literary passion for generations to come.
