In the Sory Union of Lama, Bandarban, a woman named Fatema Begum (52) was injured due to the pressure from a wild elephant's foot. The incident occurred at 3 AM on Monday (January 13) in a place called Andari.
Upon visiting the site, it was observed that in the Himchhari area of Sory, Lama, everyone at home was sleeping as usual. At around 3 AM, they were awakened by the sound of wild elephants moving, and during this time, a large elephant entered the yard and destroyed the kitchen. In the chaos, Fatema Begum, the wife of Nur Mohammad, was crushed under the elephant’s foot, breaking her right ankle and causing severe bleeding from the injuries.
Other people in the house fled through the back window in panic, managing to escape with their lives. The wild elephant moved towards the mountains in the west.
The affected family, being poor, sought help from a relative and took Fatema Begum to a hospital in Lohagara for initial treatment, and she returned home afterward. The woman needs further medical treatment, but her husband, Nur Mohammad, a poor day laborer, is unable to afford it.
Nur Mohammad shared, "I don’t know what to do now with my injured wife and young children. We have suffered damages amounting to at least a hundred thousand taka."
Neighbors and witnesses, including Mohammad Rubel, Delwar, and Ambiya Khatun, mentioned that wild elephants do not usually roam this area near the main road. About two or three years ago, an elephant had visited the area, but it was more frequent in recent years, causing damage to homes and property in the middle of the night.
Confirming the incident, Sory Forest Beat Officer Mohammad Abdul Karim said, "We are heading to the site, and according to forest department regulations, we will take necessary steps to assist the affected family."
