A dead dolphin was found floating in the Halda River near the IDF Station in Binajuri Union, Rauzan, on Wednesday (February 5) around 12:30 PM. The dolphin was brought to the IDF station. It measured 4 feet in length, 28 inches in width, and weighed 11.8 kg. According to the local Fisheries Department, this brings the total number of dead dolphins found to 44.
Officials and staff from the Senior Fisheries Officer's office in Rauzan collected data from the scene and began an investigation into the cause of death. The dolphin showed several signs of injury. It is believed that the dolphin may have died after colliding with a sharp object, causing the wounds. Since the body was beginning to decay, it was decided to bury the dolphin.
Professor Monjurul Kibria, Head of the Halda River Research Laboratory at Chittagong University, reported that from September 2017 to February 2018, 18 dead dolphins were found in the Halda River. Between March 2018 and 2020, another 10 were found, followed by 5 in 2021, 6 in 2022, and 4 in 2024. The first dead dolphin of 2025 was found recently, bringing the total number of dead dolphins discovered in the Halda River since 2017 to 44.
