A significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed between the Bangladesh government and an American company called Argent LNG. Under this agreement, Bangladesh will import 5 million metric tons of liquefied natural gas (LNG) annually from the United States. This was announced by the company in a statement on Friday, January 24.
The Louisiana-based company is managing a project to produce 25 million metric tons of LNG annually. This agreement marks the first major LNG supply deal under the Trump administration since President Donald Trump began his second term, reflecting confidence in the administration’s energy policies.
Since taking office for his second term, President Trump has taken steps to increase U.S. LNG exports, particularly to countries with which the U.S. does not have free trade agreements. As a result, the U.S. is now the world’s largest LNG exporter, and it is expected that its export capacity will double by 2028.
If the Argent LNG project in Port Fourchon, Louisiana, is completed successfully, Bangladesh’s state-owned company, Petrobangla, will import the LNG. Ashik Chowdhury, Executive Chairman of Bangladesh's Investment Development Authority, stated that this agreement will not only ensure a reliable energy supply for Bangladesh's industrial sector but will also strengthen the country’s strategic partnership with the United States.
Bangladesh is currently working to meet its long-term energy demands and has been increasing its use of LNG. However, due to its market sensitivity, when LNG prices surged after the Ukraine-Russia war in 2022, Bangladesh turned to cheaper coal. The agreement with the American company Argent LNG is expected to play a crucial role in meeting Bangladesh’s future energy needs.
