Clash at DC Park Leads to Road Blockades in the Port Area, Severe Traffic Jam, and Public Distress

Allegations of Beating Truck Drivers After Tying Them with Rope

Truck and lorry drivers and workers have blocked roads in the city following a clash at DC Park in the Faujdarhat area of Sitakunda, Chattogram. Meanwhile, police and military personnel have been deployed at the scene to restore order. Since 9:00 PM on Tuesday, February 4th, the road blockade has caused long traffic jams, with public distress reaching its peak.

As of 11:30 PM, the agitated workers were still blocking the road. They stated that they would not leave until justice was served for the assault on their colleagues at DC Park.

According to district administration sources, a fight broke out on Tuesday evening between truck drivers, helpers, and visitors in front of DC Park over parking lorries and trucks. Following the incident, some locals and truck drivers attacked the park. During this, the park's gate, ticket counter, and other structures were vandalized.

When visiting the city's Customs area, it was observed that by around 9:30 PM, hundreds of trucks, prime movers, and lorry drivers took to the streets in a procession. They blocked traffic on both sides of the road at Saltgola Crossing. Many drivers were seen snatching keys from vehicles. The office of the Chattogram District Prime Mover and Tailor Workers Union is also located in this Saltgola Crossing area.

A frustrated worker at the Customs intersection stated, "A lorry from BM Depot was passing through Faujdarhat when a private car came out of DC Park. The lorry driver signaled the car, but the driver didn’t respond. Then, they tied the driver with a rope and dragged him inside the park."

He continued, "When five other drivers went to inquire about the situation, they were also tied up and severely beaten by the park’s security personnel. Later, around 30 more workers were detained."

During the protest, the workers chanted slogans like "One demand, one solution: Close DC Park" and "Why attack my brother? The administration must answer," while blocking both private and public transport on both sides of the road.

When asked for a comment, the Additional Administrator (Revenue) of Chattogram District, Sadi Ur Rahim Zadir, said, "I am returning after inspecting the site. We are identifying the perpetrators of the assault, and we will take legal action. The situation is now under control with police and military forces deployed at the scene."
