Nizam Uddin Ahmed, former General Secretary of the Chittagong Press Club, Business Editor of Daily Observer, former Head of Reuters’ Dhaka office, founding editor of the BNP, and a valiant freedom fighter, has passed away (Inna Lillahi wa Inna Ilaihi Raji'un). He died at 5 a.m. on Wednesday, January 29, at a hospital in Dhaka.
In his passing, a joint statement was issued by Zahidul Karim Kochi, Secretary of the Interim Management Committee of the Chittagong Press Club, Maiinuddin Kaderi Shaukat, Convener of the Discipline Sub-Committee, and senior club member Shamshul Haque Haidari. A statement signed by Mustafa Naeem, a member of the interim committee, described Nizam Uddin Ahmed as a professional and honest journalist, and one of the key figures in shaping the modern Chittagong Press Club.
Nizam Uddin was a courageous, friendly, and empathetic journalist—qualities that are rare today. He was a freedom fighter who suffered under the hands of the Pakistani military and their collaborators during the 1971 Liberation War. The statement also prayed for the peace of the departed soul of Nizam Uddin Ahmed and extended heartfelt condolences to his grieving family.
