The Health Department has advised taking precautions to prevent the Human Metapneumovirus (HMP) infection by avoiding contact with infected individuals and using masks to protect against winter illnesses. These precautions were issued on Sunday evening after the HMP virus was identified in the country on Thursday.
The Health Department stated that the virus is more common in children under 14 years old and individuals aged 65 and above. It can pose a higher risk to people with long-term health conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems.
HMP virus causes respiratory symptoms similar to the flu, which typically resolve within two to five days, according to the department. However, the department assured the public not to panic and emphasized that following health guidelines is essential to prevent the spread of the infection.
Other precautions include staying at home until recovery if experiencing fever, cough, or shortness of breath, covering the nose and mouth with the arm or tissue while coughing or sneezing, and frequently washing hands with soap and water or hand sanitizer (for at least 20 seconds).
To prevent the spread of HMP, the Health Department has instructed all medical colleges and hospitals, civil surgeons, district health supervisors, upazila health and family welfare officers, and health officials at airports and ports to take necessary actions.
