The interim government has asked for opinions on the declaration of the July mass uprising from political parties and other stakeholders. On Thursday, the Chief Adviser of the interim government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, held a meeting with leaders of various political parties regarding the draft of the declaration. This consultation is part of the next steps following an all-party dialogue. This information was shared with journalists by the press wing of the chief adviser on Saturday.
The press wing of the Chief Adviser stated that after Thursday’s all-party dialogue, opinions are being collected from political parties and stakeholders involved in the mass uprising as part of the subsequent course of action. Opinions can be sent by letter to the office of the Chief Adviser’s advisor, Mahfuz Alam, until January 23. The opinions received will be reviewed, and a revised, broadly accepted declaration will be prepared. It will be announced to the public without delay.
Leaders of the BNP, Jamaat-e-Islami, and various other political parties participated in Thursday’s all-party meeting. Leaders from the anti-discrimination student movement and the National Citizens’ Committee also attended. Prior to this meeting, a draft of the July mass uprising declaration had been prepared and provided to political parties and relevant stakeholders for discussion.
The draft expresses the intention to amend or, if necessary, annul the 1972 constitution. It also mentions that this declaration will be effective from August 5 of the previous year. However, it is still a draft, and the final declaration will be based on discussions and feedback.
On December 31, the anti-discrimination student movement and the National Citizens’ Committee had planned to release the declaration at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka. The declaration sparked various discussions in the country’s political circles at that time.
There were questions from various quarters about why the declaration was suddenly being brought forward and what its potential impact might be. The interim government’s press wing clarified that the government was not involved in this initiative at that time. However, later that night, during an urgent press briefing, the press secretary to the Chief Adviser announced that the interim government had initiated the creation of a declaration of the July mass uprising based on national consensus.
That night, after a meeting, the anti-discrimination student movement and the National Citizens’ Committee announced the "March for Unity" program for December 31 at the Shaheed Minar. Through this program, the interim government was given a deadline of January 15 to release the July declaration. Following the deadline, a meeting was held on Thursday under the leadership of the Chief Adviser to finalize the declaration of the July mass uprising. Based on this, opinions are now being collected as the next step forward.
