The Chief Adviser of the Interim Government, Professor Muhammad Yunus, has expressed deep sorrow and grief over the death of former Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and retired Supreme Court Justice Mohammad Abdur Rouf. In a message on Sunday (February 9), the Chief Adviser prayed for the soul of the deceased and extended his heartfelt condolences to his mourning family members.
Justice Rouf assumed the role of Chief Election Commissioner on December 25, 1990, following the fall of the autocratic Ershad regime on December 6, 1990, after a public movement. Remembering his contributions to restoring the country to democratic rule, the Chief Adviser stated, "Justice Rouf will always be an example in the journey of Bangladesh’s democracy. He will live forever in the hearts of the people through his work."
Professor Yunus further said, "Justice Rouf was a great pillar of civil society. He worked tirelessly for the right to vote, reforms, and democracy, and the nation will remember him with respect." Justice Rouf passed away at 10 AM on Sunday at the Insaf Baraka Kidney Hospital in Mogbazar. He was 92 years old.
