Pregnant Woman Tortured in Police Custody Case Filed Against Bayezid Police OC and 5 Others

A case has been filed against the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Bayezid Police Station, two police officers, and four others, including a source, for allegedly torturing a pregnant woman and causing the death of her 3-month-old fetus. The victim, Sharmin Akter, has filed the case in the Metropolitan District Court. On January 25, the Chattogram Metropolitan Police Commissioner made the same allegation.

The defendants in the case include: Bayezid Police Station OC Mohammad Arifur Rahman, Sub-Inspector Jogotjyoti Das, Sub-Inspector Monirul Islam, Listed terrorist Sarwar alias Babla, Notorious terrorist Javed alias Bhagina Javed, and Police source Anika Islam Moni

The plaintiff, Sharmin Akter Tamanna, is the wife of Mohammad Sazzad, a listed terrorist from Aman Bazar, Sikarpar, Sonamiya Soudagar's house. Sazzad is involved in multiple cases. The charges in the case include torture and violations of the Custodial Death (Prevention) Act, 2013, specifically sections 15(1), 15(3), and 15(4).

The case details that on the early morning of December 5, the police raided Sharmin's home to arrest her husband, Mohammad Sazzad. During the raid, terrorists Sarwar alias Babla and Javed were present with the police. When they could not find her husband, Sub-Inspector Monirul Islam detained Sharmin. The police and sources allegedly physically abused and beat her.

The case further alleges that the OC of Bayezid Police Station, Mohammad Arifur Rahman, beat Sharmin with a baton, and Sub-Inspector Jogotjyoti Das kicked her in the abdomen. As Sharmin was three months pregnant, this caused heavy bleeding. She was taken to the police station without medical treatment.

The case also mentions that within 24 hours, Sharmin was not presented in court, and after 39 hours, on January 6 at 7 PM, she was falsely implicated in a case at Bayezid Police Station and sent to court. Despite her condition, she was not given medical care. On January 8, the court granted her bail.

Sharmin Akter stated that after being granted bail, she sought medical attention, and the doctor informed her that her unborn fetus had died. She alleges that the police’s torture caused the death of her child. She also claims that the police and the terrorists have been threatening her to withdraw the case, and she is now in hiding out of fear. When contacted, Bayezid Police Station's OC Mohammad Arifur Rahman did not answer the phone and did not respond to messages.
