Chaos at Khulshi Police Station: When Law Enforcement Faces Unwarranted Interference

--md.kamal Uddin,

Yesterday, an alarming incident unfolded at the GEC intersection in Chittagong, raising serious concerns about law and order. While a group of student activists were chanting slogans in support of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, some suddenly attacked police personnel. The police, confronted with aggression and obstruction during the performance of their duty, had no choice but to respond in self-defense, leading to the detention of ten individuals. However, the episode did not end there. During the questioning of the detained activists at Khulshi Police Station, another controversial development occurred—this time involving journalist Zobayer Ibn Shahadat of Jamuna TV. While presenting himself as a reporter, Zobayer’s background reveals a strong political lineage and connections. His father, Shahadat Hossain Talukdar, served as General Secretary of the Ramu Padua Union Krishak League, and his uncle is the influential Awami League leader, Mayor Shahjahan Sikdar of Rangunia. Furthermore, Zobayer is closely related to fugitive former Information Minister Hasan Mahmud, whose recommendation reportedly facilitated his position at Jamuna TV.
Breach of Law and Professional Ethics
According to the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC), Police Regulations, Bengal (PRB), and the Police Act of 1861, no journalist or civilian may enter a police station to meet detainees without explicit permission from the officer in charge. The lockup is a secured area where access is strictly regulated to ensure the integrity of investigations, evidence, and the safety of detainees. Zobayer, however, ignored these legal requirements and entered the station unauthorized, filming the questioning of detained student activists. This was not only a legal violation but also a breach of journalistic ethics, compromising investigation confidentiality and the impartiality of law enforcement. Disrespect Towards Law Enforcement Deputy Commissioner Amirul Islam directed Zobayer to stop recording immediately. Yet, the journalist refused, engaging in a public confrontation with the DC. Such behavior goes beyond disrespecting the police—it undermines the authority of state administration itself. Law enforcement personnel were carrying out their duties professionally, striving to restore order and enforce the law. By obstructing these efforts, Zobayer allowed political motives to overshadow journalistic responsibility. Political Influence and Alleged Conspiracy Observers suggest that this incident is not isolated but part of a larger pattern. Zobayer and his family have historically leveraged political connections to exert pressure on administrative bodies. Attempts to portray the police negatively following confrontations appear to be politically motivated, with Zobayer’s presence and actions potentially orchestrated to tarnish the reputation of law enforcement.
Police Uphold Law and Professionalism
Amidst this chaos, Deputy Commissioner Amirul Islam and the Khulshi Police Station team demonstrated commendable professionalism. Their clear goal was to maintain law and order, enforce justice, and protect the integrity of administrative processes. When journalists interfere with police duties for personal or political gain, it does not serve the cause of free press—it undermines the state itself. Supporting the police, in this context, is not merely supporting authority; it is supporting justice and fairness. The Khulshi incident reflects a critical intersection of political influence, misuse of journalistic power, and threats to administrative discipline. Unauthorized entry and recording inside police stations are legal violations, and the swift, law-abiding response by DC Amirul Islam and his team reinforces public confidence in law enforcement. The time has come to reclaim journalism from political manipulation, because true journalism can never be the enemy of the state—it serves the people, truth, and justice.
