Boalkhali Correspondent:
A shocking situation has unfolded in the West Gomdondi Sikder Bari area of Boalkhali upazila in Chattogram, where an expatriate family has reportedly been subjected to prolonged harassment, torture, land-grabbing, extortion, death threats, and even the hostage-taking of a 90-year-old elderly woman by a local terror group. Victim Shamim Akter (38), wife of expatriate Md Harun, recently submitted a written complaint to Chattogram Superintendent of Police Saiful Islam Shantu, detailing the atrocities committed by a notorious local gang led by Imon (Accused No. 1) and his father Abu Monsur. According to the complaint, the gang has long been threatening the family in an attempt to take over her husband’s ancestral property. The complaint further names four more individuals allegedly involved in regular extortion and forceful occupation in the area.
On October 8, 2025, at around 8:30 AM, the complainant was cutting a tree in her yard when the accused arrived in a group to attack her. When she protested, they hurled abusive language and prepared to assault her with sticks. Her daughter, Shahrin Akter (20), rushed to help, but Imon allegedly pushed her to the ground. Moments later, Abu Monsur reportedly charged at her with a machete. A major tragedy was avoided only because neighbors intervened in time. Shamim Akter also stated that the gang repeatedly threatened them, saying:
“If you resist, we will kill you and bury you in your own home.”
They also threatened to trap the entire family in fabricated cases and ensure lifelong imprisonment.
The complainant alleges that the accused have already occupied parts of the family’s homestead and forcibly constructed structures on it. They have demanded large sums of money as extortion, and the family’s 100-year-old sick grandmother has reportedly been held hostage to prevent them from taking legal action.
Although a written complaint was filed at the Boalkhali Police Station, no actions were taken, further worsening the family's fear. They worry that any moment a serious incident could occur.
Upon receiving the complaint, SP Saiful Islam Shantu immediately took the matter seriously and instructed the Boalkhali Officer-in-Charge to take all necessary legal steps regarding the allegations of terrorism, extortion, illegal occupation, death threats, and the holding of the elderly woman hostage. The SP reaffirmed his firm stance against criminal activities, stating that no leniency will be shown, and actions against the accused will be taken swiftly.
After enduring fear, intimidation, and land-grabbing for a long time, the victim’s family now feels a renewed sense of security following the SP’s intervention. They hope that this time justice will prevail and the terror gang’s oppression will finally come to an end. The incident has sparked widespread concern in the Boalkhali area, with local residents urging the authorities to act quickly so that no one else falls victim to such criminal land-grabbing in the future.
