State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Ishraq Hossain calls on journalists to play a responsible role

Maksud Ahammed : The role of the media is very important in an independent and democratic state system. The media creates an effective connection between the people and the state administration. In the past 17 years, pressure was put on journalism. Independent journalism was weakened by the influence of the government and various organizations. We have come out of that situation.”

State Minister for Liberation War Affairs Engineer Ishraq Hossain MP said this while speaking as the chief guest at a training workshop organized for journalists at Tropicana Tower in Purana Paltan, Dhaka the capital, on Saturday (May 9).

Calling on journalists to play a neutral and responsible role in highlighting the problems, inconsistencies and realities of the people, the media is the fourth pillar of the state and through it, accountability and balance (checks and balances) can be ensured in the state. At the same time, an effective communication is established between the people and the state leaders.

The very popular MP in the area also said, “Through the media, we can know the people, and the people can also know our position. Therefore, a free, independent and responsible media is very important for a democratic state.”

Addressing the journalists participating in the workshop, he said, “In the coming days, you will also work to fulfill the expectations of the people and we are committed to ensuring that there is no pressure to reveal the truth.”

Referring to past political movements, he said, “We have fought for democracy and the right to expression for a long time. Whenever injustice was done to journalists or media workers, we protested.”

At the beginning of his speech, the State Minister paid deep respect to the martyrs and heroic freedom fighters of the great Liberation War of 1971. He also paid tribute to those killed, injured and affected by the student-people's movement of 2024.

He said, “We remember with deep respect all those who have fought for democracy, freedom and justice from 1971 to this day.
