The missing case files from the public prosecutor's office at the Chittagong court have been recovered by the Kotwali police from a scrap shop. Nine sacks of files were found today, Thursday, in the Patharghata Shatish Babu Lenin area of the city. The police have arrested one person in connection with the incident, according to Kotwali police station's officer-in-charge (OC), Abdul Karim.
The police reported that the stolen files were sold by weight at a scrap shop in the Patharghata area. After analyzing CCTV footage from the court over the last two days, the police identified a suspect.
The police further informed that a person named Russell has been arrested. He was a tea vendor at the court premises. After the theft, he sold the case files at a rate of 16 taka per kilogram at the scrap shop.
OC Abdul Karim stated that, based on a tip-off, they arrested Russell from Bakalia. During questioning, he revealed that he had sold the files at the scrap shop in Patharghata. Following this, a raid was conducted, and nine sacks of files were recovered. A case is being prepared in connection with the incident.
It is reported that 1,911 case files (CDs or case documents) from 30 court cases were stolen from outside the office of the Chittagong Metropolitan Public Prosecutor. These files were kept outside due to a space shortage at the office. The files went missing between December 13 and December 31, during the court's recess period. A general diary (GD) was filed at the Kotwali police station regarding the incident.
Chittagong Metropolitan Public Prosecutor Mofizul Haque Bhuiyan filed the GD, noting that 1,911 case files from 30 sessions of courts under the Metropolitan District Judge had gone missing. These files had been kept outside the office in polythene wraps since April 24, 2023, due to a lack of space in the PP office. The files included cases related to murder, robbery, drugs, explosives, and smuggling.
