Mahfuz Rahman’s Silent Humanity on Winter Nights—A Blanket of Warmth for the Sleeping

As winter descends, the contrast between the city’s glittering bustle and the loneliness of the pavements becomes stark. While many of us sleep peacefully in the comfort of our homes, countless people spend the night shivering under the open sky. Standing beside these neglected and silently suffering individuals, Alhaj Mahfuzur Rahman Foundation has set a moving example of humanity. Initiated by Asif World Trading Corporation and operated from Railway Men’s City Center (3rd Floor), Station Road, Falmondi, Chattogram, this winter relief drive was far more than a ceremonial event. It was driven by a deep sense of responsibility and compassion for people. At the forefront of this initiative was Mahfuzur Rahman, former Assistant Police Commissioner of Chattogram Metropolitan Police. Accompanying him was his only son, Engineer Md. Asif Rahman, who is learning the true meaning of humanity by walking hand in hand with his father. Under the supervision of writer and journalist Md. Kamal Uddin, blankets were distributed last night among cold-stricken, helpless people sleeping on pavements under the open sky in areas such as Momin Road, Kazir Dewri, the Stadium area, and surrounding localities of Chattogram city. Women, children, and the elderly alike felt the warmth of this compassionate initiative. In many cases, blankets were gently wrapped around them before they could even realize—making their struggle against the cold a little easier. This journey of humanity did not end with the night. At dawn today, after prayers, Mahfuzur Rahman and his son once again set out across different parts of the city. Without their knowledge, blankets were quietly placed over sleeping people who had none. There were no announcements, no microphones, no urge for publicity—only a silent effort to see people as people. Mahfuzur Rahman said this initiative is neither for show nor for promotion; to him, it is a humanitarian duty. He believes that stories of humanity should spread so that others in society gain the courage to stand beside fellow human beings. If more people come forward with such initiatives, much of the suffering of the winter-stricken can be eased. This effort reminds us that humanity is not a grand word—it is a collection of small acts. A blanket, a quiet presence, a warm touch—these are enough to light a flame of hope in a person’s heart on a cold winter night. Let us all stand by those suffering from the cold according to our ability, because a warm society is built through extended human hands.
