Staff Reporter: The government will stand by all private-semi-government and other stakeholders working to prevent drowning, said Tanya Khan, Additional Secretary of the Department of Women and Child Affairs and Director General of Bangladesh Shishu Academy. He said that the government is always active in ensuring the protection of women and children. For this, it organizes various projects, programs and campaigns almost regularly. He congratulated and applauded the Center for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh (CIPRB) for raising awareness on drowning prevention and organizing coordination meetings with other stakeholders. He said these things in the president's speech at the function organized at Sirdap Auditorium in the afternoon. At this time, he urged all the stakeholders present to consider whether new things can be added to the revised proposal. He said that at least 30 children drowned every day. He said that about 327 thousand children have been taught swimming in 45 upazilas of 16 districts. He said, after the 2013 Child Act, child safety, child development, child protection and child survival are being worked on across the country. According to their research, about 19,000 children drown in water every year. The age of most of them is between 1 and 5 years and the death rate is highest between 9 am and 1 am, said Dr. Aminur Rahman. UNICEF representative present at the event said that they have been working with children since 2006. 6 lakh children have been taught to swim to prevent drowning. He mentioned that this work is going on in 25 districts and 12 city corporations of the country. In the event, the representative of World Health Organization said that they are associated with this program by providing all kinds of technical support. Under the initiative of CIPRB and in collaboration with Bangladesh Shishu Academy and Synergos Bangladesh, Ferdowsi Begum, Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs and Project Director of ICBC, was present as the chief guest in the program titled "Child Rights Week 2024 - Prevention of drowning is every child's right". . The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh has been celebrating World Children's Day and Children's Rights Week every year since 1992. This year too, Bangladesh Shishu Academy is celebrating the Children's Week through various activities. This year's theme is “Our commitment to protecting the rights of every child”. In solidarity with this pledge, the Center for Injury Prevention and Research, Bangladesh (CIPRB) organized an event titled “Child Rights Week 2024 – Prevention of Drowning is Every Child's Right”. Bangladesh Shishu Academy and Synergos Bangladesh were in full cooperation. The discussion was attended by representatives of policy makers, representatives of implementing projects, representatives of development aid agencies, community representatives, media representatives and representatives of domestic and international non-governmental organizations working for children. To prevent this epidemic of death, children aged 1-5 years need round-the-clock supervision and children aged 6-10 need swimming skills. A national policy has already been adopted, which is awaiting approval. Speakers pointed out that if this policy is approved and implemented, it will be possible to reduce the silent epidemic of drowning deaths across the country. Farhana Ferdeous, Deputy Communication Manager of CIPRB moderated the program. Various media personnel were also present in the event.
