Mahabub Rahman Biplab, Rangpur: A hospital director in Rangpur city has been accused of selling a newborn to recover money as the patient's family could not pay the hospital bill. With the help of the newborn's father, the hospital director sold the five-day-old baby to his ex-acquaintances for 40,000 rupees. In this incident, police arrested three people including the hospital director who rescued the newborn on the complaint of the pregnant mother.
The arrested are MS Rahman Roni (58), director of Holy Crescent Hospital and son of deceased Nazir Uddin Sarkar of Kamarpara area of the city, Rubel Hossain Ratan (30), son of Samsul Islam, the buyer of the child, and Rubel's wife Zerina Akhtar Bithi (30).
Deputy Commissioner of Police Abu Maruf Hossain gave this information in a press conference held at the Rangpur Metropolitan Police Intelligence Branch office on Sunday (January 21) afternoon. Before this, on January 17, Wednesday morning, the sale of the newborn baby boy took place on the pretext of failure to pay the bill of the Holy Crescent Hospital and exploiting the helplessness of the patient's family.
Deputy Police Commissioner Abu Maruf Hossain said that on Saturday, January 13, Labani Akhter (22) of Bhurarghat area was admitted to Room 202 of Holy Crescent Hospital on Shapla Road, adjacent to the city's central bus terminal, with labor pains. There, she gave birth to a newborn baby (boy) by caesarean section that night. Four days after that, on January 17, the director of the hospital took the initiative to sell the newborn baby in the absence of the mother, using the excuse of failure to pay the clinic bill and helplessness. With the help of the child's father, Wasim Akram, the director of the hospital, MS Rahman Roni, sold the newborn to his former acquaintances Zerina Akhter Bithi and Rubel Hossain Ratan for Tk 40,000.
He also said that after the delivery, Labani Akhter complained to the Kotwali police station, the police conducted an operation and rescued the newborn child from the central Pirzabad area of the city on Sunday (January 21). At the same time, MS Rahman Roni, Rubel Hossain Ratan, Zerina Akhter Bithi were arrested in connection with this incident. The police officer of RPMP also said that the pregnant mother has filed a case against the detainees.
