Prime Minister's speech on the occasion of Buddha Purnima

Staff reporter :  Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina delivered the following message on the occasion of Buddha Purnima on Wednesday, May 22: "On the occasion of the holy Buddha Purnima, I extend my best wishes to all, including the Buddhist community of the country. The Awami League government is determined to uphold the non-communal spirit. In our Constitution framed by the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the equal rights of people of all religions and castes have been guaranteed. We believe - 'Religion belongs to everyone, festival belongs to everyone'. The development of people of all classes, professions, communities is our main goal. Mahamati Gautama Buddha enlightened the human world through his life and actions transcending greed, hatred, lust. He was inspired by ideals of truth and beauty. Buddha preached the message of non-violence, equality, friendship and compassion for the welfare of people and for establishing peace and harmony in society. It is necessary to follow the Buddha's teachings in today's world to suppress the brute force maddened by violence, to prevent the degradation of values and to build a peaceful society. We are working to ensure a dignified and safe life for all communities. Buddhists have been participating equally in the socio-economic development activities of Bangladesh for ages. I hope that everyone will play a role in making Bangladesh a peaceful country by holding and cherishing the ideals of Gautam Buddha. On the occasion of Buddha Purnima, I wish the countrymen happiness, peace and prosperity. Joy Bangla, Joy Bangabandhu Long live Bangladesh.”
