Elon Musk’s Starlink service has 7000 operational satellites and 5 million customers in over 100 countries. SpaceX hopes to expand its satellites to as many as 42,000 satellites. On the other hand, China is aiming for 38,000 satellites.
Starlink has ensured internet service for individuals and citizens in remote areas. According to experts, many other locations may be open to a Chinese service, even though Chinese constellations won't be the preferred internet provider in places like the US, Western Europe, Canada, and other US allies.
But the main question is why China is investing in Starlink-like projects. Juliana Suess, an associate at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, stated that "there are a couple of geographic areas in particular that might be attractive for a Starlink-like competitor, specifically one made by China, including China itself." For instance, Starlink does not yet cover Afghanistan, Syria, or Russia. Additionally, a substantial portion of Africa is still unexplored.
