The bail hearing for Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, the spokesperson of the Bangladesh Combined Sanatan Jagaran Jot and former ISKCON leader, who was arrested in a sedition case, will not take place today. Although the hearing was scheduled for today, it did not occur as the case was not listed on the court's agenda. This information was provided by Chinmoy's lawyer and General Secretary of the Bangladesh Sanatan Party, Advocate Suman Kumar Roy, on Monday (January 20) morning.
He said, "Today, the bail hearing for Chinmoy Krishna Das was supposed to take place in the High Court, but it was delayed significantly on the cause list. Last week, it was mentioned in front of the honorable court, and they had said it would be mentioned this week. Following that, I, along with several senior lawyers, tried to mention it in the High Court, but the honorable court stated that since this is a sensitive case, the hearing will occur on the day it comes up on the list according to the schedule."
He added, "We will try again next week. If the case doesn't appear on the list, we will make another attempt to mention it in front of the honorable court. The bail hearing will not take place today. We pray to God that the bail hearing takes place soon, and he is granted release. We hope for justice. We ask everyone to pray for Prabhu."
Today (Monday), the Supreme Court's website showed that Chinmoy's case was listed as item number 249 in the High Court bench, composed of Justice Md. Atowar Rahman and Justice Md. Ali Reza.
On January 2, the Chattogram Metropolitan District Judge Court rejected Chinmoy’s bail application. On January 12, he applied for interim bail in the High Court. The application appeared on the cause list of the High Court bench, composed of Justice Md. Atowar Rahman and Justice Md. Ali Reza, on Sunday (January 19) at item number 306. The hearing was supposed to take place this week.
Chinmoy was arrested on November 25 of last year from Shahjalal International Airport in a sedition case filed at the Kotwali police station in Chattogram. The next day, the court rejected his bail and sent him to prison. On the same day, his lawyers filed a revision petition against the decision, seeking bail. However, a clash broke out among Chinmoy’s supporters over his bail, during which lawyer Saiful Islam Alif was beaten and killed. As a result, the hearing could not take place that day. The court later set a new hearing date for December 3. However, since Chinmoy’s lawyers were named as defendants in two separate cases related to the murder of Saiful Islam Alif, no one participated in the hearing. The court then rescheduled the hearing for January 2.
