The court has issued arrest warrants for five individuals, including the former Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Cox's Bazar, Ruhul Amin, and former District and Sessions Judge, Sadikul Islam Talukder. The order was given on Thursday, January 23, by Judge Munshi Abdul Majid of the Senior Special Judge’s Court in Cox’s Bazar. The other accused in the case are: Advocate Mostak Ahmed Chowdhury of the Cox’s Bazar District and Sessions Court, Nazir Swapan Kanti Pal of the District Commissioner’s Office, and stenographer Zafar Ahmed of the District and Sessions Court.
This was confirmed by government prosecutor Siraj Ullah, who mentioned that after receiving a report from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the court issued the arrest warrants. The case stems from an allegation of embezzlement of 20 crore taka meant for land acquisition for a thermal power plant on November 19, 2014. Kaisarul Islam Chowdhury from Cox’s Bazar filed the case, and the court directed the ACC to investigate. During the investigation, the name of former DC Ruhul Amin, who was identified as a forgery, was removed from the case documents. Afterward, Kaisarul Islam filed another case, and Ruhul Amin, Sadikul Islam Talukder, and seven others were named as accused.
The ACC's report revealed that in 2014, a total of 237 crore taka was allocated for the acquisition of shrimp ponds, houses, and other infrastructure. Of this, 46 crore taka was allocated for shrimp pond acquisition, but 19 crores, 82 lakh, 8 thousand, and 315 taka were embezzled. A case was filed at the Cox's Bazar Sadar Model Police Station on December 7, 2014, accusing Ruhul Amin and others. After a lengthy investigation, the ACC found evidence of embezzlement amounting to almost 20 crore taka.
In this case, Ruhul Amin was sent to jail on May 22, 2017, after his bail application was rejected. However, he is currently out on bail. The ACC has already arrested several other accused, and the case is currently under trial in the Special Judge’s Court of the Chittagong Division.
