By Md. Kamal Uddin | Sada–Kalo Multimedia News House: Since assuming responsibility for maintaining law and order in the Chattogram Metropolitan Area, Police Commissioner Hasib Aziz has played a significant role in ensuring public safety and community service through numerous important initiatives. A distinguished officer from the 15th BCS cadre, he carries a family legacy of police service—his father, Azizul Haque, served as DIG and Police Commissioner of Chattogram, later becoming the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and an Adviser to the Caretaker Government. Following that legacy, Commissioner Hasib Aziz has earned recognition as a dedicated, skilled, and visionary police officer. Since taking charge in Chattogram, his focus has not been limited to crime suppression alone; he has emphasized public service, traffic discipline, control of narcotics and cybercrime, ensuring security in port and industrial zones, and building closer communication between police and the public—making policing more humane and effective. Many believe that one day he will rise to the rank of IGP and write a new chapter in the proud history of Bangladesh Police. Through this exclusive interview, we gain insight into his vision, experience, and contributions to the safety of Chattogram’s citizens—a reflection of a competent and compassionate leader. Chattogram is not just a port city—it is the heart of commerce, industry, culture, and social interaction. Keeping such a diverse and dynamic city safe is not merely an administrative duty—it’s about ensuring the security of hundreds of families, children, workers, and business owners. At the forefront of this duty stands Police Commissioner Hasib Aziz, who has long been dedicated to preserving the peace and order of the city. He is a rare kind of officer—strict yet humane, tech-savvy yet approachable, an administrator yet deeply committed to public welfare. In this special interview with Sada–Kalo Multimedia News House, we explore his perspectives, challenges, achievements, and future plans.
Question 2: What major changes have been noticed since you took charge? Commissioner: Our first step was strengthening the Beat Policing system. Each police station area was divided, and designated officers were assigned to maintain direct communication and provide quick response. We enhanced surveillance in key intersections and port areas through CCTV and technology. Using AI-based CCTV systems, suspicious activities are now detected instantly. We have increased night patrols with mobile and motorcycle teams, allowing faster crime response after dark. Most importantly, we’ve ensured transparency and accountability. Any delay or irregularity in a police station is monitored directly.
Question 3: What steps have you taken to improve relations with the public? Commissioner: Public trust is the greatest strength of the police. I always say, “People are your friends—stand beside them.”
We’ve introduced: Hello Commissioner, hello OC—direct complaint channels. Dedicated help counters for women, children, and the elderly. Stronger Beat and Community Policing. These steps are helping people see police not as a symbol of authority, but as partners in safety.
Question 4: Drug abuse is often called Chattogram’s biggest challenge. What’s your experience? Commissioner: Drugs don’t just fuel crime—they destroy families, society, and youth. We’ve launched a special anti-narcotics task force. Daily operations are conducted against drug dealers, including those involved with Yaba, Ice, and Phensedyl. Our clear message: There is zero tolerance for drug dealers.
Question 5: How important is technology in policing? Commissioner: The future of policing lies in technology. We’ve already implemented: AI-based CCTV analytics. A digital crime database. Experimental drone surveillance. Our goal is to make Chattogram a Smart Policed City.
Question 6: Recently, there have been debates about cybercrimes and leaked police communications. What’s your view? Commissioner: We see such incidents as threats to national security. At times, maintaining law and order requires firm measures. However, our relationship with journalists remains friendly, and dialogue is always open.
Question 7: How is the traffic management and road safety situation? Commissioner: Chattogram’s roads are narrow, population dense, and the port area faces chronic congestion. We’ve taken steps like: Restricting port transport at specific times. Expanding traffic signal coverage and mobile traffic units. Reducing motorcycle-related crimes. As a result, public complaints have decreased, and discipline on the roads has improved.
Question 8: What is your philosophy of leadership?
Commissioner: Three principles: strictness, humanity, and accountability. Be tough on crime, humane in dealing with people, and ensure accountability among officers. That’s how policing in Chattogram can become modern and people-centered.
Question 9: What are your future plans and goals?
Commissioner: To make Chattogram a safe, smart & peaceful city where people can move freely at night. Women, children, and the elderly feel secure. Society is free from drugs. The port and industries are safe. Traffic runs in order. This is a long journey, but we are fully committed. During the interview, Commissioner Hasib Aziz spoke candidly about his experiences and evaluations. He noted that after taking charge during the challenging year of 2024, he appointed 16 new Officers-in-Charge (OCs) across the city’s police stations, many of whom achieved commendable results. Despite numerous reforms, he emphasized that he keeps track of every OC’s performance. Commissioner Aziz’s statements reflected firmness and professionalism. He said that the brave, competent OCs serving in key stations would be duly recognized based on their work, attitude, investigative skills, and public accountability. At the same time, he acknowledged that a few officers had deviated from professional ethics. Regarding them, he took a firm yet humane stance—“We will take necessary steps to bring them back on the right path, Insha’Allah.” His words revealed a rare balance—appreciation for professionalism and zero tolerance toward misconduct. This interview presents an honest and transparent image of Chattogram Metropolitan Police’s direction under his leadership.
