Desk: The current Executive Committee of the Chattogram Diabetics Samity can continue performing their duties for the time being. This was confirmed by the Hon’ble Appellate Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh. During the hearing held on 14 December 2025, the Supreme Court stayed the operation of the High Court Division’s judgment and order dated 16 February 2025. Earlier, the High Court Division had temporarily suspended the Executive Committee of the Chattogram Diabetics Samity and appointed Writ Respondent No. 4 as the Administrator/Interim Committee under Sections 9(1) and 9(2) of the Voluntary Social Welfare Institutions (Registration and Control) Ordinance, 1961. Professor Jahangir Chowdhury, representing the current committee of the Samity, filed Civil Petition for Leave to Appeal No. 2080 of 2025 before the Supreme Court. Advocate-on-Record A.K.M. Nurul Alam appeared on his behalf. The petition challenged the High Court Division’s judgment and sought to maintain the committee’s operations while securing the right to appeal. During the hearing, both parties were given the opportunity to present their arguments. Subsequently, the Appellate Division granted leave to appeal and ordered that the High Court’s judgment remain stayed. As a result, the Executive Committee of the Chattogram Diabetics Samity can continue to carry out its duties for the time being. Lawyer A.K.M. Nurul Alam told reporters, “The Supreme Court’s decision is legally significant. It will help maintain the normal functioning of the Chattogram Diabetics Samity and facilitate the process of appeal in the future.” The Chattogram Diabetics Samity has long been engaged in serving patients and providing support to diabetic individuals through various social, medical, and educational initiatives. Recent controversies and the temporary suspension had posed challenges to its operations. However, the Supreme Court’s directive ensures transparency and proper functioning of the Samity’s committee. According to the Supreme Court’s ruling, the operations of the Chattogram Diabetics Samity and the responsibilities of its Executive Committee have been reaffirmed. This is reassuring news for the Samity’s members, patients, and all stakeholders involved.
